Okay, I need to ask—why is EVERY American obsessed with pizza? 🍕 No, really. I feel like every conversation about food eventually turns into "Where’s the best pizza?" "What’s your favorite topping?" "New York vs. Chicago?" It’s like a national personality trait.
Don’t get me wrong, I like pizza. It’s crispy, cheesy, and honestly, I respect how easy it is. But do I dream about it? Not really. 😅 In Korea, pizza is more of a fun, sometimes food. We have sweet potato pizza, bulgogi pizza, even corn and mayo pizza (don’t judge, it’s amazing). But here? It’s a lifestyle.
Since I’m always trying to understand American food culture, I decided it was time to make my own pizza at home. How hard could it be, right?
The Attempt: My Homemade Pizza Disaster (or Success?)
First of all, no one warned me that pizza dough is basically alive. It stretches, it shrinks back, and it does NOT listen to me. I watched three different YouTube videos, and still, I ended up with something that looked more like a sad, lumpy pancake than a pizza. But whatever, we push through. Thankfully, it was my coworker Molly I talked into stretching out the dough.
For toppings, I went classic:
🍅 Tomato sauce (homemade, because I’m dramatic)
🧀 Mozzarella (because cheese is the best part)
🌿 Fresh basil (to feel fancy)
I put it in the oven, set a timer, and prayed to the pizza gods.
The Result: Not Bad, Not Great, But I Get It Now
Was it the best pizza I’ve ever had? Absolutely not. The crust was… chewy (let’s call it that), and I definitely put on way too much cheese. But sitting at home, pulling slices apart, burning my mouth on hot cheese, and eating it straight from the pan—I kinda got it. It’s comfort food. It’s easy. It’s fun.
Do I think Americans are still too obsessed with pizza? Yes. But will I make it again? Also yes. Maybe next time, I’ll try adding bulgogi or sweet potato, just to see if I can convert my friends. 😆
So yeah, I get it now. Pizza night is a whole experience. But you know what’s even better? Korean BBQ night. 😉🔥
